K-cupsicles

K-cups are crazy wasteful.  I mean, they aren't recyclable and they add up quickly, especially in offices around our nation.  I hope that some entrepreneuring company comes up with a recyclable k-cup soon but until then all we can do is craft with them.  I really wanted to do something different that I hadn't seen on pinterest or the web and I was thinking they would make a great popsicle mold but of course they always have that hole punched in the bottom.  After cleaning out a bunch of k-cups (removing foil, grounds and filter), I plugged it up with a dab of hot glue.  And since they were coffee k-cups (and I have been needing a few extra doses of caffeine in the afternoons these days), I thought mocha popsicles would be yummy. I made a cup of coffee, added sugar, cream and chocolate sauce and let it cool down.  I was pretty sure the hot glue would be fine but didn't want to chance it.  Then I filled the cups with about 2oz of liquid and placed them in a muffin tin to hold them upright.  I used a piece of foil to hold the popsicle stick straight up and placed them in the freezer overnight.  To release the "cupsicle" I dipped the cup in hot water for about 30sec or so and they came right out. After a refreeze just to get them less melty, they were good to go and I have to say on a hot day like today, they really hit the spot! Can't wait to try this with juice or other yummy stuff!

PS.  If it has ever crossed your mind that k-cups might be a great tiny cupcake mold, don't bother.  At 350F for 10 minutes (and a very well-vented kitchen just in case they gave off some crazy plastic fumes), this is what happens to a k-cup.  Think Shrinkydinks....

This post is part of the Upcycled Crafting Challenge (#freefromtrash) hosted by Calley, The Eco Chic, and is part of a one month challenge to create from trash.  This challenge will hopefully open your eyes to the number of items that we still end up trashing every day that could be used by ourselves or our kids to create fun and useful items.  To find out more about the challenge and to see other projects click on over to Calley’s announcement post.

    1. Thanks Mackenzie!! Are you going to do iced coffee or something maybe fruity?? Will love to see what you make. Hey and I LOVE your rice crispies sand castle cake. You could even cover it in brown sugar to make it even "sandier" LOL.
